AS FROGS START STIRRING after their long winter hibernation, the first thing they’re looking to do is get their groove on. But making frog whoopie comes with some serious risks–that’s why Community Service Volunteers’ Action Earth campaign opened an underground (literally) frog hotel to shelter frogs from predators while they meet and greet with other frogs of the opposite sex. IN A DESPERATE CALL FOR rain, farmers in the Nepali village of Gairi arranged a marriage among two local frogs last week. The ceremony was performed by seven priests and attended by nearly 2,000 people from the surrounding areas. It is a Hindu belief that frog marriages please the rain god, Barun Devata. For many Hindu people, the sound of frogs croaking is a sign that a monsoon will soon come. But central Nepal has been without rain for already eight months–we hope the frogs can help!
